The rules, in plain English
What actually happens when you scrap a car in Ireland
Scrapping is not just handing over the keys. Here's what has to happen so the car is legally off your name and off your insurance.
It must go to an ATF
End-of-life vehicles have to be deposited at an Authorised Treatment Facility. Ollie handles that leg for you - you never have to arrange a tow or find a yard.
You need a Certificate of Destruction
The ATF issues a Certificate of Destruction, and that is what takes the vehicle off your name on the National Vehicle and Driver File. Keep your copy.
Scrapping should pay you
A vehicle still has value in metal and reusable parts. You should be paid for it, not charged for removal. Ollie quotes a firm figure up front.
Guidance based on Ireland's end-of-life vehicle rules - see Citizens Information for the official detail.
